I’m Kasey — I’m a writer, traveler, and lover of Belgrade.
Six years ago, I met my now-husband, Aleksa, aboard the Miss Ellis Island ferry. This ferry takes people to Liberty Island (where the Statue of Liberty resides) and Ellis Island (formerly, America’s busiest immigration station.)
But we weren’t tourists; we were employees. We spent a summer working together on Liberty Island: me in the gift shop, Aleksa in the restaurant. I was working to save money for college; Aleksa was working in congruence with his work & travel visa.
When the summer came to an end, we decided to try a long-distance-relationship between Manhattan and Belgrade. And then we got engaged. And then the pandemic happened. And then we had two weddings. And then we went though a long, tiring visa process.
This blog highlights the low-points and high-points of our ongoing love story: plane rides, wedding cakes, attorneys, rakija barrels. But it also explores Belgrade: Aleksa’s home, and the place I’ve come to know and love these last five years.
Aleksa and I are no longer in an LDR. We live together, happily, in New York City.
